Walking into danger

Proverbs 14: 16 The wise fear the LORD and shun evil, but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure.

Proverbs 27:12 Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but an unthinking person will walk right into it and regret it later.

I have often wondered why Samson in Judges 16, so blindly trusted  Delilah even though she proved over and over that she was untrustworthy. Why didn't Samson run away from the deceitful Delilah. She had thrice divulged to the Philistines the information he gave about the source of his strength. Samson should definitely have known Delilah was up to something fishy. Actually he must have known the Philistines together with Delilah were out to destroy him. So why didn't Samson take precaution?

I think we sometimes foolishly gain too much confidence in ourselves. We tend to trust our ability to fight the enemy, so much so that we throw caution to the wind and become hotheaded and feel secure, just as Proverbs 14:16 puts it. Instead of shunning evil or any semblance of evil, we rather party with evil, and lie to ourselves that we can handle this. We clearly foresee danger, but assure ourselves that we can overcome it.

Little by little, the devil lures us until we end up in his arms. In Judges 16, we read about how consistently Delilah lured Samson into a weak state and then overpowered him. Samson was over confident, he shook himself, and thought he was still strong. We cannot party with sin and evil, and still be strong. It weakens us, to the point where God leaves and we are destroyed.

After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.
Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison.  But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.

We cannot afford to party with the enemy. We have to be sensible as the Book of Proverbs cautions, and think fast and smart whenever we smell sin and danger. To fear God, we must shun evil. To embrace evil is to welcome the enemy to destroy your life. It is walking into danger like Samson did.
