Prompt Obedience!

Joseph, the husband of Mary, the Mother of Jesus was a very obedient man. He obeyed God and His instructions promptly concerning the birth and life of Jesus.

Matthew 1:19-24  And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.  She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him.

In the era that Joseph and Mary lived in, it was shameful for a woman to have a baby out of wedlock, and most men would never marry such a woman. However, Joseph was willing to marry Mary, simply because God had asked him to. This was his utmost obedience to God, in spite of the ridicule he knew he could face.

Once again after Mary had Jesus, Joseph obeyed God's instruction to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt.
Matthew 2:13-15  Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

And just as God warned, Herod killed all male boys aged two and below, soon after. The prompt obedience of Joseph averted the untimely death of baby Jesus. Let us learn from Joseph and obey God's Word promptly. The Holy Spirit would lead us each day, it is our duty to listen and obey, and it will be for our own good if we do.
