The Troubled Mind

John 14:1  "Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. (ISV)
"Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.(NLT)

The entire chapter of John 14 is revelatory. Jesus tells his disciples not to let their hearts be troubled, but to believe in the Father and in Him. He reassures His disciples that even though He will soon go away, He was going to prepare a place for them at His Father's house. Jesus reminds them that they already know the way to where He was going. He interacts with His disciples and lets them know that really knowing Him is knowing the Father, and knowing the way to the Father.

Jesus said something remarkable: Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

Jesus's message to His disciples was a simple one: if you claim to know me, and know the Father, and if you believe in my words which are the words of the Father, then you ought to rest assured that we will never fail you. You have to rest in the truth that we will do what we have promised. You have to believe that if you ask, you shall receive.

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

If you truly believe in my works, and in all the miracles you have seen and read about, then you must never worry or be troubled in this world. For you must be certain that you are serving a great God of possibilities.

Jesus was simply saying - You claim to believe in me, and claim to know me. But indeed if you do really know me, and hence the Father, you will have no cause for your heart to be troubled. A troubled heart is likely not in faith. A troubled heart may have given in to some bit of fear and doubt. A troubled heart could be out of sync with friendship with the Trinity - God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit as an advocate to His followers. And cautions them once again against being troubled.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

The next time you are tempted to worry and be troubled at heart, think on God's wondrous works of the past, think about His faithfulness, believe in His Word and in His promises, ask Him what you desire, and trust that He shall grant your heart desires in accordance to His Will. Stay in faith, pray and/or sing praises to Him, and rest in Him.
