A father brought his son with a deaf and mute spirit before Jesus to be delivered. Initially this father had approached the disciples of Jesus, and asked them to deliver his son of the evil spirit, but they could not.
Being disappointed, he told Jesus in Mark 9:22 - "....But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”
Jesus thereby answered - 23“ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus.“Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Jesus repeated the words of the man - "If you can." This is because He knew there was more to his statement . This father had already faced a big set back - the disciples were unable to deliver his son. "What if Jesus was also not able to deliver him," he may have thought. Uncertain and skeptical, he kept it real and replied:
24Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
He gave a very honest reply. His faith was wavering and he needed Jesus to help him to even have faith. Are we truthful like this man? Do we approach God in spirit and in truth, unveiling our true state and feelings? Or do we pretend before God? Acting up as though all is well, and yet sinking so low and deep.
Although God already knows our thoughts and hearts, He requires our honesty because He has given us our free will and wishes we will freely come to Him in our true state, and with honesty commune with Him.
Learn to unmask before God. Come naked at heart. Come as you are. No false fronts and fake attitudes. Be real!
