“Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also.” But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship.
Acts 27:14-15 NIV
Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island. The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.
God speaks to us all the time. Sometimes through His servants, and at other times through our thoughts, and by what we see and hear.
Whether we pay attention to it or not is the issue. In the Bible verses above, Paul, a prisoner for his faith warned those he was travelling with of imminent danger ahead. Paul was a man full of the Spirit. He therefore spoke under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, but his words were ignored. Rather they followed the wisdom of men - that of the Pilot and the owner of the ship.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.
1 Corinthians 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
All on board the ship nearly perished because they refused to listen to words from God's Holy Spirit spoken by His servant. We ought to be discerning. We ought to commit our way to God and be sensitive to His voice.
