King Herod's pride - his downfall!

Acts 12: 21-24 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.  They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.
But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.

God despises anyone who is haughty, but lifts up the humble.  When Herod was extolled as not being a man but a god, he received the praise in pride. Not acknowledging the place of God in His promotion. This is what God detests- when man relies and trusts in himself, or puts his entire trust in another man.

The Word of God says in Isaiah 31:1-3 that Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord.

Yet he too is wise and can bring disaster; he does not take back his words. He will rise up against that wicked nation, against those who help evildoers. But the Egyptians are mere mortals and not God; their horses are flesh and not spirit.

When the Lord stretches out his hand, those who help will stumble, those who are helped will fall; all will perish together
