King Herod's pride - his downfall! (Part 2)

Acts 12: 21-24 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people.  They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.”  Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

 But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.

King Herod did not perish because he believed the words of the people that he was a god. This is because in actual fact, in the eyes of God we are gods because He created us in His image. Psalm 82:6 confirms this - “I said, ‘You are “gods”;you are all sons of the Most High.’

The heart of Herod was not right. He was filled with pride and disregard for God. Prior to his death, Herod had ordered the execution of James merely because he was a Christian,  and had planned same for Peter who fortunately was miraculously delivered from it.

This had angered Herod who had killed the guards put in charge of Peter's prison. In God's eyes, those guards were innocent so Herod was guilty of multiple murder. Herod was condemned in God's eyes. Yet he gloried in himself and swelled up with the praises of men.

The verse after Psalm 82:6 reads But you will die like mere mortals; you will fall like every other ruler.” Without God, we are powerless gods who die like mere men. Without God, we are in the dark as stated in Psalm 82:5 “The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.They walk about in darkness ,all the foundations of the earth are shaken.

How dare us to disrespect God and still think we have a right to life - either on Earth or hereafter. Without God, we have no life. Jesus said " I am the way, the truth and the life."

Choose Jesus and choose life, even life eternal!
