Pay Attention!

1 Samuel 3:1-14

As Samuel served in the house of God, he was accustomed to his daily routine of serving Eli, and answering his calls. Samuel was sleeping in the House of God , where the ark of God was, and where the presence of God dwelt. Yet his mind was not necessarily on God, his mind was on the earthly things around him. Immediately upon hearing his name called, Samuel run to Eli, saying - “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. 1 Samuel 3:5

This happened three times. Eli also had his mind far from heavenly things as he could not discern that it was God calling Samuel, until after Samuel had run to him three different times. Then finally, Eli gained spiritual insight , and discerned rightly that Samuel was lying where God resides, so it may be God calling him.

1 Samuel 3:8-10 Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

Samuel mentally tuned into the spirit and for a moment put the earthly behind him , so he could answer a heavenly call. When Samuel took his mind off those things he could see, he was able to interact with what could not be seen. He entered a realm where he interacted with the spiritual realm. He interacted with God who could not be physically seen. God had all along been close to where Samuel was, the ark was His residence. Samuel was where God was, but oblivious to His presence. Have you ever been at a place where you were pensive so much so that you remained oblivious to the presence of another individual? This was where Samuel was. His mind was not conscious of God's presence, but more conscious of Eli's existence.

We ought to pay attention to the things of God. We must be in the Spirit, attuned to the voice of God, so we can discern the call, wordings and directions of God. God is always guiding us, we must be attentive to what He is saying and doing at every point in time.
