Obedience, not sacrifice

Saul disobeyed the instruction of God. He did not destroyed all that God had instructed him to destroy from Amalek. He also had the cheek to sacrifice to God what he had not destroyed. God was displeased, and sent Samuel to Saul.

Samuel rebuked Saul - 1 Samuel 15: 22-23 Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.”

God seeks our obedience, not our sacrifices. Do what God wants you to do, not what you want to do for Him. God should be our focus, and obeying Him must be our aim and priority. Rebellion is just as the sin of witchcraft. It is evil and an abomination to Him. Stubbornness is an iniquity, and is as idolatry. We cannot place our made up sacrifices in the stead of obedience. Obedience is better than sacrifice.

God desires your obedience. A sacrifice in obedience is what is acceptable to God. David, a man God described as after His own heart, knew how to please God. He wrote in Psalm 40:6-8 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—but my ears you have opened —burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—it is written about me in the scroll. I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”

David wrote God's word on his heart, and his greatest desire was to do God's will. He faltered at times, but always sought God and made things right between himself and God. God loves such souls. May you be called a person after God's own heart - one that seeks to do His will.
