Crossing over on God's Word

Key Scripture: Mark 4: 35-41

Jesus spoke a word to His disciples - “Let us go over to the other side.”
What followed after He had spoken this word seemed like a great obstacle to its fulfilment. The journey to the other side appeared to be hindered by a great storm. Jesus's intentions to cross over looked almost impossible as the storm raged. His disciples actually thought they were all about to perish in the storm - And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

Jesus had peace enough in His heart to sleep soundly through this storm because He knew that the Words He spoke were spirit and life, that is to say that His words were alive and able to create that which He sent them to do. John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. God's Words create and pave ways through deserts and rivers. They pull down strongholds and hindrances, and build bridges where there was none.

God re-iterates this in Isaiah 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

On the boat, Jesus knew the words He had spoken would carry Him to the other side. Confidence in His words gave Him the peace to sleep. He was unperturbed by the storm, unlike His disciples who woke Him up out of fear. Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?”

Jesus marveled that His disciples had no faith in His previous Word. He was relying on His word to cross over, and expected same from His disciples. God's Word is sure and reliable. We have to hold on to it, to securely reach our God given destination.
