The pride of life

I had a short conversation with a survivor of a brain tumour. His words touched my heart and soul. He said -" I used to be very materialistic, but after my battle with brain tumour, I feel very lucky to be alive. I no longer care about material things. I cannot be bothered to even shop for myself. I now think of others first, and want to make others happy. I am no longer self centered."

I saw genuity in his eyes, his fight for life a year ago had brought to him a realisation of how fleeting life is, and how vain human possessions are. 1 John 2:16 says For everything in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--comes not from the Father but from the world. The New Living Translation puts it this way - For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world.

Let not your heart be in physical possessions and attainments. They are fleeting. One day we will have to leave this world, and these things have no relevance where we are going. Don't let what you have or do not have control you. Do not put such things before God. God is everlasting but human possessions and physical things are not lasting. They come and go. They expire, die, spoil, etc ,etc. Keep your eyes on God, be faithful to the call of Jesus. In this way, you will be called wise - one who built his house on a rock.
