Pride goes before a fall

Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 29:23  A man's pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.

Wikipedia defines pride when used with a negative connotation as: an inflated sense of one's personal status or accomplishments.

When we think of ourselves too highly than we ought to, we are said to be proud, and this can buy us a free fall from glory to grass.  In Daniel 4:1-37, we read about how Nebuchadnezzar became proud in himself, and how God brought him down to the level of animals, he ate and acted as an animal. His hair grew like eagles' feathers and his nails as birds'claws, until God had mercy on him and restored him. Nebuchadnezzar learnt humility the hard way, and acknowledged God as Soverign after his ordeal.

Satan also became proud and thought he could be greater than God. He lost his place in Heaven, and is awaiting an even greater punishment of brimstone and fire. In 2 Chronicles 26:16-21 , we learn of how King Uzziah became proud and suffered for it - But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.Azariah the priest with eighty other courageous priests of the LORD followed him in. They confronted King Uzziah and said, "It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD. That is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honored by the LORD God."Uzziah, who had a censer in his hand ready to burn incense, became angry. While he was raging at the priests in their presence before the incense altar in the LORD's temple, leprosy broke out on his forehead. When Azariah the chief priest and all the other priests looked at him, they saw that he had leprosy on his forehead, so they hurried him out. Indeed, he himself was eager to leave, because the LORD had afflicted him.King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in a separate house --leprous, and banned from the temple of the LORD. Jotham his son had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land.

We must be careful not to sidetrack the Lord or His Laws, and become proud. Pride will crown us with shame and disgrace here on Earth and/or in the here after.
