Occupy till I come
In Luke 19:11-13, the parable of money usage, Jesus tells of a certain nobleman who went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. He called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
Jesus told this parable to emphasise how we ought to live whilst we await the second coming of Christ and his Kingdom . We have heard from long ago that Jesus will soon come. In the earthly parlance, we might think it has taken long to come. However, Peter reminds us in 2 Peter 3:9 that the Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is long suffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Whilst we wait for the Lord, we ought to take care of what He has made us stewards of, and to add to the fortunes of His Kingdom. We must concentrate on doing the Work of God wherever we find ourselves, with whatever we have been given. In the above parable, the nobleman gave an amount of money to his servants, and asked them to occupy until he comes, that is, to do business with it until he returns. In the same vein, God wants us to use our talents and gifts to expand his Kingdom and work. He expects us to put what He has given to us to work.
Sometimes we wallow in self pity, and ignorantly compare our gifts with those of others, we compare our resources and situation with those of others, and then, tend to think we do not have much or enough to make a great impact. God uses this parable to warn us of this mistake - in this parable, one servant gained ten pounds with the money he received from the nobleman. Another gained five pounds , but one servant safely kept his pound in a napkin. He did not put his gift to use, and made no investments for the nobleman.
This upset the nobleman. When we sit idle in God's house, doing nothing with what He has endowed us with, we upset the Master. Every gift in you has been placed there for the betterment of God's Kingdom. You must put your gift and talents to use, as you shall give an account of how you've used them.
