1 Corinthians 3: 5 -9 After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work. For we are both God’s workers. And you are God’s field. You are God’s building.
As Christians, we can become worldly and carnal, and allow the spirit of competition and superiority complex to set in. This is ungodly and not Christ like. In 1 Corinthians 3 :3, Paul admonished the Corinthian church saying : You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?
God called each one of us and gave us roles to play - the smallest seeming role and the biggest appearing role are all very important to God. He who is called to teach in God's house, or to evangelise to millions of people at a time, is not greater than he who is called to clean and prepare the venues where such great meetings take place. The reward for each one will be based on what was done with one's given task. It will not be about what role you were given per say, but about how well you played your given role. Paul emphasised this point in verse 5 of 1 Corinthians 3 : After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us.
Please take note of the phrase - Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. Brethren, the most important thing is to do the task God has given to you. If it is to pray, then pray. If it is to preach or teach through writing, then do so. If it is to build charities to feed the poor, then do so. If it is to help manage the economy of a country, do so with a faithful heart. If it is to minister in songs, do so gladly. Each one must ensure they are doing what the Lord has called them to do. That is imperative, because the Lord has need of you in a given field. You are not your own, and must follow instructions. Those in the military, know and understand what it means to follow their masters. They go on given assignments chosen for them by their superiors, and cannot simply decide to do what they want, or like.
God is our master, we must go to Him to direct us on our assignment and how to execute it. Prayer is the key to unravelling purpose. Our natural gifts and talents point the way to our callings as well.
All the best with your God given assignment!
