A Peek at His Majesty

I remember clearly one stormy night, there was a blast of extremely loud thunderings and lightnings. It was so scary, I felt as though the flashes of lightning were coming straight at me. I cowered in fear, and held on tightly to my husband, whispering - "This definitely must be the Lord's return.''

As the storm raged on, I was terrified, it was such a tremendous display of God's awesomeness. Never in my life, had I experienced such a great storm, and all I could think of was - how great is our God! It therefore came as no surprise that on radio that morning, the presenter, together with callers expressed my exact sentiments - they thought it was the end of the world; some hid under their beds; and they realised there was a supreme God.

A similar thing happened to the Israelites in Exodus 20, but prior to that in Exodus 19, the Israelites had consecrated themselves to meet with God.  Exodus 19 : 16 - 19 reports - On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently. As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.

In the above scripture, take not of the sentences - ''Everyone in the camp trembled,'' and '' the whole mountain trembled violently.''

Our God is a mighty God, at the sound of His voice, every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall oneday confess that He is God. Why should we be afraid of evil and evil tidings when we serve such a great God? James 2 : 19 reminds us that You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.

In Exodus 20 : 18 -19 we learn that When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”

God is great and loving. He wants us to be aware of His power and might, and not get into His bad books because He can be terrifying. He needs us to fear Him and obey Him so that we can experience His goodness at all times. He is a loving and forgiving Father, but must not be taken for granted. In Exodus 20 : 20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”

Let the fear of God be in your heart, that you may please Him and not incur His wrath. God is great and very, very , powerful. Rest assured in His might and power!
