TAKE THE FIRST STEP

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

Fear cripples us, but faith propels us into action. The course of our lives is not always clear. Manoeuvring through life can be like going through one senseless maze. Our paths are not always mapped out, and are sometimes winding and undulating. Life often presents to us scary junctures, where every step seems impossible, and moving forward appears frightening.

When we come to a stage in life that appears as a no-win situation , a complete catch-22, we need faith in order to face the insurmountable. The four lepers in 2 Kings 7:3-20 were faced with one of life's rotten moments where hopelessness grinned at them. They had an option to either succumb to fear, or surrender to faith. Fear was screaming at them to accept their fate, and take no action. However, faith asked them to take a risk and brace the consequences. Faith threw caution to the wind and exclaimed - I do not know which turn to make. I am caught between a rock and a hard place. I cannot see the whole staircase, and do not know what is ahead. But I will be bold, and will make a move anyway. It is better to fail at trying, than not to try at all.

So the four lepers took a step into the unknown. I guess they might have been shaking with fear with each step of faith. Moving in faith does not necessarily mean there is the absence of fear. Sometimes faith looks at fear squarely in the face. Faith and fear can dwell side by side. You as an individual always has the choice to choose either faith or fear. The four lepers chose faith and plunged into action. They took staggering steps into an unknown journey, a journey they knew could spell their doom . One good thing about faith is that, it waits for you to take the FIRST STAGGERING STEP, then it stabilises your steps. Faith caused the footsteps of the lepers to resound like that of giants, so much that it scared their enemies away.

Faith whispers.... when faith calls, it begins with a whisper. When we heed its call, then it roars. Queen Esther in the Book of Esther, similarly had to answer the call of faith or that of fear. She chose faith! Both the lepers and Queen Esther retorted at fear - " If we perish, we perish." You must not allow fear to render you non-performing. Move in faith! Take that first bold step! Like a child learning to walk, you may fall after the first step, but don't give up, try again, and again, until your steps are firm, and you can run. Even then, don't stop - keep running! And even fly if you can.

There is so much more you can achieve in life if you heed faith's call, and renounce the voice of fear. Faith is the language of champions. It cuts across religions and doctrines. It is the innate nature of God that abides in every human being because we have the breath of God in us. Awaken faith and move mountains!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SEE THE WHOLE STAIRCASE, JUST TAKE THE FIRST STEP!
